Poster Making 101

Wee...Fan Friday!

Venus Trapped in Mars
By now, anyone that visits my blog on the regular (thank you!) knows that I love baseball <3 Besides watching the actual game, eating the food, and drinking some booze...one of my other favorite things is the fan posters.

I love making fan posters. It's pretty much the only way I get to be artistic and show my fandom at the same time!

As a seasoned vet of poster making, I thought I'd give everyone some tips! First, you should consider your goal with this poster. Do you want to get the attention of a player or get on TV?

If you want to get on TV, your best bet is to incorporate a network name with something related to the sporting event you're attending. There's a pretty good chance they'll catch you as they go into or out of a commercial break!
ESPN. And I'm assuming people have seen his penis because he was drunk.

And being drunk is part of every sporting event. If it's not, you're doing it wrong.
NBC. and America's team...or so they say.
You know what other kind of poster gets you on TV? Funny ones...
Cutting it close...at a ball game with buddies instead of
being with your pregnant spouse. Way to go dude.
The Mets have always and will always suck.
Boys night out. Your wives are probably
out shopping with your MasterCard.
A broken heart is funny, no?

People try to get the attention of a ball player because they either love them, or hate them.

Here's some ball player love!
There's also "I want some player love" posters
I've got dibs on him girl...
Everyone loves to hate athletes, that's why heckling is so much fun!
This hate is totally justified.
I usually make posters when the Yankees are in town...below is my favorite one I've made except you can't really see my face! I love it because I took it to the Yankees v. Angels series I went to when I had turned 21 and by game 3 (pictured) it had fallen apart. While we were in line waiting to get into the stadium for the last game, a couple of people stopped me to tell me they saw my poster on TV the night before :] That made me so happy!
Yankees are in San Diego this weekend it will be my last opportunity to see Mariano Rivera close a game. Below is my poster for this weekend's series...
MO: Greatest Of All Time.
Do you ever make fan posters? What's your goal? I'm gonna try to get on TV anddd get Mo's attention! Wish me luck this weekend! Hopefully I get a Derek Jeter gift basket <3

It's also #backthatazzup Friday, and it seemed appropriate that my first link-up would be Mo's walk out song.

Weekend Update: Cornstalks I Tell Ya!

Weeeeeeeeeeekend update :] It was a good one!

Let's start with Thursday. I'm in a theater for wannabe teachers this semester and we spent a majority of the time working on a play that we were supposed to perform for an elementary school. We had to write the play/scripts, master the craft of acting, develop and construct out set, and put on a show for the kiddies. Thursday was performance day. It went really well, I'm pretty sure everyone loved it! It took place at Story Farm, Farmer Jessie was the narrator, Petunia & Penelope pig were BFF's with Sally the sheep and even though Shaggy wanted to play with them super bad, he couldn't get them to notice him. Throw in some costume changes, our interpretation of 1 Dalmatian's performance at the Farmer's Choice Awards, the moral of our story which is "Be Yourself" and viola! you have the best play of our class. At least in my opinion. Keep your eyes peeled for Shaggy the Shy Wolf at a jungle gym near you!

Friday was my friend Caroline's birthday so I went over to her place and had dinner with her and her family. The plan was to go out to downtown SD for a night of dancing and drinking. Unfortunately, my back decided it'd be a fun weekend to hurt. No idea what happened but the muscles are like super tight. This kind of killed my plans to go out because of how much it hurt. I waved goodbye as I headed home and they headed to the club.

Saturday was Caroline's pool party/BBQ so I headed back to her place to hang out. It was a pretty beautiful day but the water was cold :[ butttt that didn't keep me out. Spent most of the time playing with her super adorable 3 year old nephew but I did manage to mingle with the grown-ups. We played some drinking games and corn hole and it eventually turned into a jacuzzi night with all of us haning out. I stayed until 11-ish because it was time to head home and get some sleeeeeep.

[Cool & The Gang with a few missing]

Sunday a group of us headed out to Del Mar for the Brizal Bazaar at the Fairgrounds. One of the CLAMS, Keri, is engaged, so we hit up the madness to do some scouting. Holy moly talk about craziness. There were so many people there, and so many vendors! It was more of picking up fliers and seeing cool stuff rather than actually talking to vendors about details and pricing. After a few hours of that, we all went out to La Jolla for some lunch. Good food, good drinks, and good times had by all :]

Then we all parted ways, but Caroline, Chelsea, and I stayed in the area because we scheduled massages for Lime's birthday at Spa Gregories in Del Mar. Thanks for the hook up Groupon! Oh, btw...my masseusse's name was DRAGON. That was pretty awesome. Hahaha. The massage definitely relieved a majority of the tension that was in my back that carried over from the other day! They've gained a customer in me!

Back to reality. Whomp.

How was your weekend?

Loteria Art Show

Before I even start this post, I want to mention that I own no rights to any of the images on here, and do not intend on any copyright infringement against any of the original artists and simply want to show appreciation for the art I was able to see this weekend. Welp, that takes care of the legalese, right? Haha.

Being Mexican [1/2 bean in my case] is so great. Delicious food.  Killer booze. Fun music. Beautiful dancing.  Stunning art.

A friend of mine posted this article of Facebook and immediately decided I needed to go to the first event mentioned: The HeART of Loteria.

Loteria is Mexican bingo, but instead of drawing ping pong balls with the letter and number combination, it's a deck of cards with drawings such as "La Sirena" [the mermaid], "El Diablito" [the devil], "La Rosa" [the rose], and "El Barril" [the barrel], among others. 54 others.
This game is a staple in all Mexican families, and mine plays it when we get together every holiday. There's the dealer and every time they draw draw a card on your board, you mark it with a bean, penny, or any other kind of chip you have lying around.
The bet is usually a quarter per game to cover the entire card. There's side bets for the getting all 4 corners, or a horizontal or vertical line for usually a dime. We're not big gamblers. haha.

So after seeing this event on the SD City Beat, I kind of did my research and my excitement grew. I decided to take my mom and grandma since my mom's birthday is on the 19th and I'll be sitting in class instead of celebrating with her.
Here are some of my favorite pieces from the show...
Cards Pictured Above: [El Pescado [the fish], La Sirena [the mermaid], El Gallo [the rooster], La Muerte [the death], El Camaron [the shrimp], La Dama [the lady] , El Negrito [the black man], La Luna [the moon], El Pajro [the bird], La Calavera [the skull], El Borracho [the drunk], El Sol [the sun], El Catrin [the dandy], El Apache [the apache], El Venado [the deer], El Diablito [the devil]. Can't zoom in enough to read the title or the artist's name. Oops.
Again, I can't read the title or the artist of the work...major fail on my part. Especially because this one is probably my favorite of the show. I'm pretty sure every single card in the deck is depicted in this one piece of work. It reminds me of the dogs playing poker picture that we all know and love.
I absolutely LOVE living and being born and raised in California, and this painting tugs at my heart strings. West Coast represent <3 La Mano [the hand].
This one of La Sirena [the mermaid] is extremely bad ass...It's a wood burn. So much crazy detail. I can't imagine the patience and pressure of a steady hand that mastering something like would take!
The two above were some of my other favorites. These are by Joni Nunez. LOVE them. Lately, I've had this slight obsession with the day of the dead sugar skulls and these paintings remind me of them! The left is La Sirena [the mermaid] and the right is La Muerte [the death]. I actually purchased a couple of prints by the artist before I entered the show. She had a booth out and bought some 8x10's. Check out her facebook and etsy shop. Lots of cool stuff!
My purchases :]

Another one that strongly appealed to me due to my love of sports was the one below. Even moreso because it was San Diego area sports. El Caballo represented by the Chargers, El Perro represented by the Tijuana Xolos, El Azteca represented by the San Diego State Aztecs, and El Padre represented by the San Diego Padres.
 A closer look...
Some other cool ones!

Besides the art hanging on the walls, there was an artist doing body painting, another live artist painting on a HUGE piece of canvas, another guy painting portraits for tips, plus a grupo playing Mexican music, and Baile Folklorico.

Overall it was a super cool event, a little bit unorganized but they eventually got everything straightened out. Glad I checked it out!
